4. Activity

We are in our last 3 sessions of videos of this Bible survey learning series.  How exciting is that!?! Take turns pretending you are Buck Denver holding a Bible.  When its your turn say, “This is Buck Denver reporting the news. I’d like to report that my favorite book of the Bible is _____.”  (Then say your favorite book of the Bible). You can use the table of contents in a Bible for help.  Make sure your parents get a chance to share too.

As everyone shares their favorite book, expand the discussion by asking everyone to say something extra about their favorite book and how it helps them learn about God or learn to trust Him more.

6. Activity

Play this game along with a quiz based on the video

Supplies: Write the following words on five cards and place around the room:

1)  Epistle of Courage

2)  Peace of God

3)  Do not repay evil for evil

4)  Loving people

5)  3 Chapters

Pick a parent to read this: “Today, we are learning about the General Epistles and specifically learning about 1 and 2 Peter. Let’s play a game called “Follow the Word!” We’ll follow the instructions Peter gave to encourage Christians in the Roman Empire. I will place the answer cards around the room. When I ask the question, look for the card that has the answer. When you find the right card, stand by the card, or jump in line behind the first person to find it, and shout, “I am following this word!” Then I will give you a few more directions!"

Questions and Answers and Directions

1. The letter of 1 Peter is written to encourage Christians in the Roman Empire. Some people call this the Epistle of ________. (Look for the answer card!) (Answer: Epistle of Courage)

Directions: (Child’s Name) has the correct answer and is our leader. Look at the card you are nearest and raise your hand if it says Epistle of Courage. The person holding it is our other leader. “Lead us in your best bear walk.” (After a minute stop the kids and ask them to stand apart and ask them the next question.)

2. In 1 Peter, we are reminded that we will sometimes suffer, but that God promises us what kind of peace? (Look for the answer card!) (Answer: The Peace of God)

Directions: (Child’s Name) has the correct answer and is our leader. You lead us in a line jumping to make our line become a circle. (After a minute stop the kids and ask them to all face the center of the circle. Then ask them the next question.)

3. Find a partner, and look in your Bibles at 1 Peter 3:8-9. When difficult things happen, what does Peter have to say about repaying evil? (Look for the answer card!) (Answer: Do not repay evil for evil)

Directions: (Child’s Name) has the correct answer and is our leader. You lead us in a game of leapfrog. (After a minute stop the kids and ask them to sit on the floor. Then ask them to discuss the following.) Follow up discussion: “The Bible says, “do not repay evil for evil.” Close your eyes and think of a time this week or recently when someone did something to you that was not nice. How hard was it for you to not do something mean back to them? For example: If your brother pushed you, was it hard to not push him back?

4. 2 Peter is a shorter letter. How many chapters are in the book of Second Peter? (Look for the answer card!) (Answer: 3 Chapters)

Direction: (Child’s Name) has the correct and is our leader. You lead us around our space in follow-the-leader by skipping, clapping and singing all at the same time. (After a minute, stop the children and ask them to stand still.)

5. In today’s video, we learned that Peter explains how the Holy Spirit helps us to be more like Jesus. And, when we are more like Jesus, good things will come out of our lives. What is one of those good things? (Look for the answer card!) (Answer: Loving people)

Direction: (Child’s Name) has the correct answer and is our leader. You lead the line around the room and then back to our space to watch the next video.

8. Activity

Supplies:

Piece of paper (1 per person)

Something to write with (crayons/markers/colored pencils, etc)

Say:  "We serve a great God. Our great God gave us the Bible and the letters inside the Bible in order to show us how to live. Let’s think about a verse that can help guide us toward loving others like Jesus.  We are going to spend the rest of our time looking at 1, 2 and 3 John to see if we can find a verse worth living by. Then we will write it down on our leaf and add it to our verse tree."

Pray asking God to help each child find a special verse. Sit quietly for a few seconds, praying that the Spirit moves and leads in each child’s heart.

ENCOURAGE children to open the Bibles, and look for a special verse that helps them live like Jesus. If children are struggling to find a verse, point them to a few examples:

  • 1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

  • 1 John 4:11: “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”

  • 2 John 1:5 “And now I ask you.... not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning... that we love one another.”

  • 3 John 1:11 “Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God.”

Say: "Now that you have found a special verse, take a moment to think about your verse and what it means to you. Then we will write it down, decorate it, and put it somewhere special as a reminder."

10. Activity

Closing discussion, ask each participant to share one new thing they learned about God, the Bible, or our own walk with Jesus (leader included, of course).  After sharing, remind students that their special verses can help us remember to love others like Jesus, and live like Jesus.  Then, go around the circle and say your verses.  Next ask student(s) to pray their verse(s). Say, “When I say your name, say your verse and ask God to help you live out the verse this week. I’ll start.” Then pray your verse by saying it aloud, followed by “God, please help me live this verse this week. Thank you for your help.”

Enjoy this lesson together!!

11. For Later!

Here are some review questions you might ask each other later this week:

  1. What are the second-to-last and last books in the Bible? (Jude, Revelation)

  2. You’ve almost completed the Bible! What is something new you’ve learned about the Bible, or God, or walking with Jesus?

  3. What is a doxology? (A tiny poem that praises God)

  4. What are the three things that John said should be in the life of someone who’s following Jesus? (True Teaching, True Living, True Loving)

  5. Remind me about the special verse you chose. Would you like to put it on the fridge or hang it in your room?
